Texas Renew Driver's License Appointment: DPS DMV Booking Guide

Online renewal at Texas.gov costs $33 and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Your new license arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks. The catch is eligibility. Texas DPS requires every other renewal cycle to be in person so the office can capture a fresh photo, do a vision screening, and verify your address. If your last renewal was online, your next one is in person. If your last renewal was in person, your next one can be online if you meet the rest of the criteria.

In the data we observe across renewals, about 40-50% of eligible Texans qualify for online renewal in any given cycle. The disqualifiers below are what push the rest into an in-person appointment.

• Your last renewal was in person. Every other cycle is in person by law. If the last one was online, this one is in person.
• Your license is not expired more than 12 months. Online renewal is available up to 12 months past expiration. After 12 months, you must come in person.
• You are between 18 and 78 years old. Drivers 79 and older must renew in person every cycle. Drivers under 18 follow the provisional license rules.
• You do not need a new photo. Texas takes a new photo every other renewal anyway, so if your last photo is from the last cycle, you are due in person.
• Your name and address on the license are still current. Name change (marriage, divorce, court order) or address change requires an in-person update.
• You are not upgrading to [Real ID](/services/real-id-upgrade). Real ID adoption requires in-person document verification. If your license does not already have the gold star, plan an in-person visit.
• You hold a standard Class C license, not a [CDL](/services/commercial-drivers-license). CDL renewal is in person every cycle, regardless of timing. See our CDL renewal page for the separate rules.

The fee depends on age, channel, and timing. There is no penalty for renewing early. There is a small late fee if you renew between 1 and 24 months after expiration, and a complete reset (apply as a new driver) past 24 months. • In-person renewal, age 18-84: $33 for a standard 8-year license.
• Online renewal, age 18-78: $33 for an 8-year license.
• In-person renewal, age 85 and older: $9 for a 2-year license. Texas shortens the cycle but discounts the fee.
• Late renewal, 1-24 months past expiration: $33 base fee plus a $20 late surcharge. Total $53 for the in-person path. The $20 surcharge is enforced by DPS per Texas Transportation Code §521.421 but does not appear on the DPS fees page; always verify current fees and surcharges with Texas DPS directly before paying.
• Past 24 months expired: No renewal path. Reapply as a new driver: $33 license fee, plus the written and driving tests.
• Real ID upgrade combined with renewal: Same fee. No surcharge for adding the gold star at renewal.
• Texas ID card (non-driver) renewal: $16 standard, $6 for residents 60 and older.

To renew a Texas driver's license in person you need: your current or expired Texas DL, proof of Social Security number if it is not on file, and (for first renewals after a name or address change) the supporting documents below. DPS will not accept photocopies. Originals only, or certified copies for legal documents.

The path branches at Step 1. About half of renewers finish at Step 2 (online); the rest continue to Step 3 and book an in-person appointment. The in-person appointment itself is short. Most of the elapsed time is the wait between booking and the appointment date.

• Step 1: Confirm online vs in-person. Run through the eligibility list in Section 1 above. If you pass all 7 checks, go to Step 2. If you fail any one, skip to Step 3.
• Step 2: Renew online at Texas.gov. Sign in, confirm address, pay $33. Download the temporary paper license. The plastic card arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks. You are done.
• Step 3: Book a DPS appointment. Schedule at public.txdpsscheduler.com under Renew Texas DL. Metro Mega Centers run 3-6 months out; smaller offices clear in 2-4 weeks.
• Step 4: Gather documents from Section 3 above. Standard renewal needs 2 items. Name, address, or transfer cases need additional originals.
• Step 5: Arrive 10-15 minutes early. Check in at the kiosk. DPS verifies documents, takes a new photo, conducts a vision screening, and processes payment.
• Step 6: Receive your temporary paper license. The permanent plastic card arrives by mail in 2-3 weeks. Carry the temporary in your wallet alongside another photo ID until then.

Driving on an expired Texas license is a Class C misdemeanor. The fine is up to $200 plus court costs, and the offense can stack with other moving violations. The renewal window stays open for 24 months past expiration. Past that, the renewal path closes and you reapply as a new driver. The path depends on how long the license has been expired.

You can renew your Texas driver's license up to 2 years before the expiration date printed on the card, and up to 2 years after. The renewal does not subtract from the new 8-year cycle. If you renew on 2026-01-15 and your old license expired 2026-06-30, your new license is valid for 8 years from the old expiration date (2034-06-30), not from the renewal date. Renewing early does not cost you time on the license.

The practical answer: renew when convenient inside the 24-month early window. That's especially true if you fly soon (and need Real ID), need to drive without expiration worry, or have a planned appointment for an unrelated DPS service and want to bundle. The metro DPS appointment-search wait is what kills late renewers — at 4 months out from expiration, you may not have a clear booking; at 6 months out, you do.

• Earliest renewal: 24 months before expiration. No early-renewal penalty.
• Latest renewal: 24 months after expiration. After 24 months past, reapply as a new driver.
• Recommended renewal window: 4-6 months before expiration. Long enough to find a metro DPS appointment, short enough not to waste time on the old card.
• Online renewal window: Up to 12 months past expiration, then closes.
• In-person renewal window: Up to 24 months past expiration with the $20 late surcharge between 1 and 24 months.

Three categories show up repeatedly in our support queue with different rules than the standard renewal flow: drivers 79 and older, drivers transferring from another state, and drivers whose legal name has changed since the last renewal.

Garland, Houston Gessner, Carrollton, Leon Valley, and Pflugerville are the slowest. Smaller suburban DPS offices, often 30-60 minutes outside the metro, clear in 2-4 weeks. • The official DPS scheduler at public.txdpsscheduler.com is free; you watch for slot openings yourself and book the first one that fits. At busy Mega Centers the openings disappear in seconds when they appear.
• Third-party alert services send a text or push notification when a slot opens. The booking step still happens manually after the alert, against everyone else who got the same alert at the same time.

The day-of checklist is shorter than the eligibility documentation list. Most renewers arrive with their current license, payment, and any change-of-name or change-of-address paperwork. Confirmation number is on the booking email. DPS staff verify each document at check-in; missing any one means a rescheduled appointment and another 2-4 week or 3-6 month wait depending on the office.

• Your current or expired Texas driver's license. If lost, bring another government photo ID and a printout of the booking confirmation.
• Your booking confirmation number from public.txdpsscheduler.com (printed or on your phone).
• Proof of Social Security number if SSN is not already in your DPS record (SSN card, W-2, IRS 1099, or recent pay stub).
• Documents for any changes since last renewal: marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order, or 2 proofs of new address (see Section 3).
• Payment for the $33 renewal fee (cash, check, credit card, or debit card). $9 if you are 85 or older. $53 if you are renewing between 1 and 24 months past expiration.
• Arrive 10-15 minutes early for kiosk check-in. DPS will not hold your slot if you arrive after the appointment time.
